Languages change, we all know this. New words and phrases always have a funny way of making their way into our vocabulary. And while some succeed, others fail to do just that, resulting in us forget them. But this year, more than 1000 words were added to the Oxford dictionary. So it’s only befitting that we at Language Reach put together a list of 10 newly added words that we believe to be perfectly appropriate of 2014…

• CONTACTLESS (adj.): Technology that allows a smart card to connect wirelessly to an electronic reader in order to make a payment.

• HAWT (adj.): Informal spelling of the word hot. When something is very hot emphasis is put on the tone in which it is said.

• DUCK FACE (n.): An exaggerated pouting expression in which the lips are thrust outward, usually during taking a ‘seflie’ (see below).

• JEL (adj.): Jealous

• LOLCAT (n.): A photograph of a cat accompanied by a humorous caption written typically in a misspelled and grammatically incorrect version of English.

• SELFIE (n.): A photograph that one takes of one’s self, normally taken on a smartphone.

• SIMPLES (adv.): Describes something that is very straightforward.

• SPOILER ALERT (n.): Warning that an important detail is about to be revealed.

• TIKI-TAKA (n.): A style of play involving extremely short passing and an importance on keeping control of the ball.

• BAE (n.) An expression of sweet talk for one’s partner. The term is a shortening of babe or baby, though some say that it is an acronym for “before anyone else.” The word can also be used as an adjective to describe something which some likes.
